an hour an ISP, who doesn't even own the servers that house
the information, detected a file (presumably by monitoring
that file as it passed through a piece of hardware),
identified it as contraband and took action against the server
it was housed on. For them to take action on one file implies that they
are critiquing all
files. That includes your email folks.
The fact that
someone's job is to
determine whether or not what I'm doing is kosher and shut
down my host if they don't think it's appropriate is a little
scary to me. I'm not defending child porn (on the contrary, I
have kids and think
people who engage in that behavior should be punished
severely) but it seems a little .... creepy to have someone
analyzing my every net move.
I dunno.... maybe I'm
overreacting....

I've read other posts on
other sites mention that theplanet.com is famous
for this sort of thing. An RIAA or MPAA complaint against a
client's ip means termination of account.
I think the
only solution might be to colo with someone other than theplanet.com.

Seb, I completely agree with you... |
|
|
Seb, you make all good
points. I absolutely agree.
But oh jeez, I really
don't want to leave jc-host. It's such a pain to find a web
host that is reliable and low-priced.
But then again,
I'll worry a lot less knowing that my email server is working
all the time. I guess being able to worry less is worth a
couple of extra bucks. Sigh.

I would have to say no to that, just for
the simple fact that internet servcies (including
Hosting and Internet Connection) are not a matter of
"luck". Furthermore, an ISP just can't shut down a
server for an investigation, that is just not the way
they operate.
So basically what I'm saying is,
if this is going to be the same each time one of your
customers uploads illegal material to your server, then
all your clients would have to have their sites down
until your ISP finishes the "investigation"; and that is
going to ruin your business and probably some of your
client's businesses as well.
On top of that,
imagine I upload private data to my server, something
like client information or information that is only to
be discussed with the company I work for, or even
personal stuff, then the ISP is going to be cheking your
server all the time and they will be looking at my
information. Eventhough it's not illegal, i don't want
them to look at it; but they are going to do it anyway.
If this is going to be the case, i would have to
ask for a refund.
And I am sure many of your
customers will do it as well; because nobody is going to
tolerate this situation two or three times a
month. |
Look! Can you get it into you! This is
not MY fault. This is not most of YOUR fault. This isnt
SCHEDULED! This prob wont happen AGAIN! The odds of this
happening are very small, especially twice! Now, what else can
I do guys? Moan at the ISP... What do you think ive been
doing?! Now, all I can do, is the same as you guys... Wait...
There is nothing else I can do... My business is prob going to
go down the pan because of some loser putting crap on the
server! And, what else can I do!!! Your all getting at me,
saying that some of its my fault, or im not doing enough! WELL
I CANT DO ANYTHING ELSE!!

I have been up all night trying to
get the ISP's attention! I havnt had a wink of sleep for at
least 24 hours... Im tired, im fustrated, im stressed... I
know how you guys feel, but... I cant do anything...

Jack, just want to say, I'm
not fussed about the server going down. It happens
Chin Up, hopefully it will be over soon.
You
provide one of the best hosting packages in the World, not
many people can offer what you give.

| Yes jack, i know its
probably not your fault, but this is happening quite
often...it gets annoying after a while. especially when your
trying to compete with one of the biggest rap sites on the
net. | |

I appreciate what you are trying to do Jack and all we
have to do is wait. How long? That is the question really.
Also one other question is whether our data is in danger here.
I cannot help thinking that a trigger happy 18 year old in the
hosting company will do something like rm -fR to the
contents... The way it looks is that we will be on by Tuesday
since today is the weekend and things have to start rolling on
Monday.... (I hope not but I fear so...)
Anyhow,
please give us an update as soon as you have one.

Question Jack if you know
the answer: Is there an ability to access the server and get a
zip or something of our contents/sites? If this is going to
take long I would be more happier if I could have an up to
date backup of my contents/databases and email files.
Thanks _________________

I'm sure Jack will tell us
as soon as he knows the status, but like last time it's
probably out of his control.
Jack, just out of
curiosity, who is this
ISP that has us in their unforgiving grip? If I need colo
services in the future, I would like to know who to avoid!
Also, is there any way to create a failover mailserver
on the box jc-host.com is on (since the ISP for that box and
our sites is clearly different) ? I think a lot of us would be
in a much better situation if we could just get access to new
email instead of all our contacts thinking we're out of
business. | |

This is not MY fault |
I can
understand this is not your fault in some way, but hey, you're
the owner here, who else do you want us to complain to then?
I would love to believe that this is not gonna happen
again, or at least not very often; but to be quite honest, is
just difficult.
Now, we would like to know which ISP
you are dealing with, so that we know who to avoid in the
future as someone else said. I could personally write a
letter, even signed by my lawyer mentioning that this kind of
issues are causing us some trouble, that might help in some
way.
So, Please let us know who your ISP is and who
was the user with the account in investigation; I think we all
have the right to know who is behind all this stuff and
probably take some action.
