Game Development

Hako Software

Let's face it, games are the #1 reason to own a computer.  For many years, producing and selling games has been my dream job.  Now at 35 years old with wife and children, I can't give up my nice steady University Job to go work for a game company.  Most game companies work on the concept of "crunch time," meaning everyone puts in insanely long hours near the end of a project to get the game shipped as close to a target date as possible.  I simply refuse to give up that degree of home life for a job.  As a result, I have become a game programmer hobbyist/professional.  I will sell whatever I can, but I do this for my own personal gratification, and not as my primary income.  If I can sell/license some games, then maybe I'll consider starting my own development group.  Until then, this is just for me.

If you want to write games, and I know you do, here are some resources:

Programming
  • NeHe - nice OpenGL and gamedev tutorials.
  • Flipcode - the IOTD (Image of the Day) can be an inspiration at times. Dead for a while now.
  • Game Tutorials - just what it sounds like.
  • GameDev.net - game development resources.
  • Christian Coders - game overviews and programming resources
Tools
I have developed a great affection for free tools as of late.  The lesser GPL (LGPL) gives a great deal of freedom for developers who want to sell proprietary software, and I encourage use of and contribution to open source software.  I have my own minimal contribution.
  • Dev-Cpp - Development IDE based on the Ming gcc compiler.  Very nice!
  • SDL - cross-platform graphics, sound, and input API.  With this and Dev-cpp, you could write a game.
  • Kyra Sprite Engine - Great sprite library, but no Dev-cpp support yet.
  • ClanLib Game SDK - cross-platform, and more high level features than SDL.
  • Allegro - full featured cross-platform giftware game API
  • Visual Assist - great plug-in for MSVC from Whole Tomato Software.  Worth the money.

Games (open source or small developer)
  • NetHack - the single best game ever.  I played for 15 years before I beat it.
  • Warblade - Edgar Vigdal's great game.
  • PomPom - Great games made by just two guys.

Data Resources

Miscellaneous

...and totally unrelated

  • Sara Groves - I've been listening to her music a lot lately.

I'm looking for a good resource for 2D art for games.  Any suggestions?
